   • I understand these are enlarged veins in my swallowing tube that can burst and cause life-threatening bleeding.
   • I know high pressure in veins around my liver is usually due to liver scarring, but a blood clot can also cause it.
   • I know large varices, severe liver disease, red marks on endoscopy, alcohol use, or a prior bleed raise my risk.
   • I treat the cause of my liver or vein disease and follow my plan to lower pressure and prevent bleeding.
